Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage has become one of the largest tourist attractions in the country due to its distinctive population of elephants.
It was opened in 1975 as a home for five abandoned baby elephants named Vijaya, Neela, Kadira, Mathlee and Kumari. Baby-elephants can’t survive in the wild on their own as they suckle form their mother until they are almost 5 years old.
Not only abandoned babies live in the orphanage, but injured or maimed adult elephants are also taken care of here. The orphanage is currently a home to 93 elephants.
