Kalutara is the administrative center of Sri Lanka Western Province. The city got its name from one of the four biggest rivers in the country – Kalu Ganga. A huge snow-white stupa Gangatilaka Vihara is located on the bank of Kalu Ganga. It is the only hollow stupa in Sri Lanka, so it is possible to enter it and explore from inside.
The ancient Maha Bodhi tree is also one of Kalutara main attractions. The direct descendant of the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment grows in Anuradhapura, it is strictly guarded, so no one can touch the sacred tree. Our Maha Bodhi also originates from the tree sacred to all Buddhists, however you can touch it!
Richmond Castle was built at the beginning of the last century and belonged to one of the richest planters of that time, Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena. The castle was built based on the plan of similar castle belonged to Indian maharaja. Exclusive materials were used for the construction – mahogany from Burma, tiles from Italy, Scottish stained-glass windows, English forged products and fittings.
